If My People...Pray
Read Daniel 9 and Nehemiah 1
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14, ESV)
So often we look at this verse and seek to apply it to our nation and its sin. While that is ok, is it the true application of this verse? God was speaking to His people Israel. Israel was a people called out by God from among the nations to be God’s special people. They were the people through whom He chose to manifest His glory and bring salvation to the rest of the world. Does this sound familiar to you? It should. God has called the church out of this world to manifest His glory and bring the message of salvation to all people.
This verse applies more to the church than it does to our nation. The call from God to repentance is to us, “If my people who are called by my name…” I don’t care how many dollar bills have “In God we trust” on them, that doesn’t make this nation God’s chosen nation. Israel alone holds that distinction. What this nation needs are Christians, God’s chosen church, who remember that they are sojourners from another land, planted here to be salt and light and to proclaim another kingdom – God’s kingdom.
Do we want to see our nation become more holy? Then we need to become more holy, separated from this world’s passions and desires. Do we want to see people repent? Then we need to repent and turn to God, firmly placing our trust in Him. For we are His chosen vessels of healing walking in the same Spirit of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.
““The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,” (Luke 4:18, ESV)
